Homework at Victoria Junior School

English and Mathematics Homework:

Children will be given an English and Mathematics Task every Wednesday. The task will need to be completed in their homework book each week.
  • Their homework books need to be handed in on a Monday, so that your child’s work can be marked.
  • The homework will normally consolidate the learning that your child has completed that week. On occasions, there may be new learning opportunities on topics that have not been covered in class; children may need some support with this work.
  • During the school day, your child will be able to mark their work and ask the teachers any questions before getting new homework.
  • The homework will be acknowledged by an adult weekly (e.g. a sticker, stamp, tick or a short comment)
Spellings:
  • Ten spellings to be learnt each week.
  • Children have an overview of their spellings for the whole term which they can work through weekly.
  • Children will complete a Spelling Dictation Test weekly, every Friday.
  • Please help your child to learn their new spellings each week. Please also look at the spelling pattern of the words, so that children can transfer their skills to a range of spellings.
  • They will record their score in their diaries every Friday.
Reading:
  • For children to make good progress with their reading, we need to work together to develop their love of books. In order to support this process, each night, parents and pupils should spend time discussing and sharing books. Rather than only hearing your child read, it would be very helpful if you could also ask questions about what has been read.
  • Every week, your child will also bring a library book. This will be an opportunity for them to choose any book that they are interested in so it may be a book that they are familiar with or a book that they need help to read. Please read and talk with them about the book and bring it back the following week.
Timetables:

Every child will have a login to access this. Please get them to practise these every day. As well as TTRS, the children can practice their target table or tables on a range of websites.

These include:
They might also enjoy practising their tables through music.

With practice and repetition, their speed and accuracy will improve and this will impact their ability across the Mathematics curriculum.

Please speak to your child’s class teacher, in the first instance, if you have any issues, concerns or feedback you would like to share.
